Medium Density Fiberboard (MDF) is a manufactured, wood composite board, and more cost effective than real wood. MDF is not particle board, although they are somewhat related. Medium Density Fiberboard is denser than particle board and lacks the imperfections and grains of real wood, which makes it ideal for carving decorative trims or furniture items.
Medium Density Fiberboard is an ideal material for painting. The man-made fibers grab onto paints, resisting chipping and cracking. Also, MDF does not grow and shrink as real wood can. The many benefits of MDF have caused it to be regularly used for furniture, cabinets, craft work, and flooring.
Extremely environmentally friendly, MDF uses pieces of wood and sawdust that otherwise would have been burned or dumped in landfills. The construction of MDF has increased the usage of excess lumber drastically, which has helped to boost the amount of existing forest in the United States.
